It helps people understand connections between people and the earth because it shows you location and movement and human environment and interaction and how people talk to each other and region shows you how people are in an area. I think region is the most difficult because in the beginning you would think it's the specific area and you don't know it until you just keep guessing then once your realize what it actually is it makes more sense.

The easiest thing with basic map skills for me was the coordinates because I like latitude and longitude and I like finding things on maps. I found this easiest because I always remember latitude like sat-itude for some reason and longitude like standing up so your long. What I struggled with the most is the Cardinal Directions, compass roses always confused me because I never remembered where the west and east was but I feel like I got better at it. Basic map skills are important because they help you learn how to read maps. They help you understand geography better because if you are told to find something at a location of latitude and longitude and you go to find it and succeed you know how to use latitude and longitude.
